Barbershop Directory

The Barbershop Directory

Feel free to add Barbershops that you have been to for a shave and would recommend to others. Describe your experiences and the level of treatment you received. If they have a website add a link to them. Hopefully between us we can create a comprehensive directory of quality Barbershops that provide a good wet shave experience.

A custom Google map listing all barbershops referenced in this wiki page can be leveraged here. Note that non B&B reviews are often available via the Google maps directory page for each barbershop referenced.

By elmango. As of June 2011 - How to describe heaven to people on earth? This is my challenge finding words to describe a haircut, shave, and massage experience at the Westin Chosun. I would fly to Seoul every three weeks just to get a haircut and shave here. Seriously. First, proprietor cannot speak any english, but will point you to a menu of services which is a painless communication system when combined with sign language. Each private booth is well appointed with towels, classic barber chair which magically transforms into a massage table as well, etc. The prep work is amazing for a shave, have to experience it, or PM me for details, otherwise would take up a page here! Cost: Haircut (best I've ever had), Shave (best I've ever experienced, by far), and Massage (1 hour - best I've ever experienced) - approx $150,000 Won ($120 USD or so at that time). WHY ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH CAN'T WE GET THIS SERVICE IN THE U.S? If you have found such a barbershop CONUS side, please fill us in ASAP.

You will get a pre-shave facial massage using Taylors pre-shave oils, followed by the first hot towel. After the towel, your choice of Taylors cream is lathered on to your face and the first WTG (with the grain) pass is performed. Following the first pass is another hot towel, scented lightly with refreshing bergamot oil, as is the first towel. You will then be re-lathered and a second pass is made with the razor, this time XTG (across the grain). A third pass is made, if necessary, with a wet lather to clean up any renegade patches of stubble that may have escaped the first two passes. You will then have witch hazel applied to your face which is then followed by a very cold towel to close the pores. A quick facial massage with Taylors aftershave balm is next and the shave is completed by applying a little splash of the cologne or aftershave of your choice. Total cost £15 - The whole shave experience takes approximately 35 minutes

By elmango 2012-03-26: Shop very into classic barber shop services. Shave and haircut cost $25 and both were top notch. They had a few true barber chairs but my barber didn't have one sadly so didn't get to put feet up. Shave done with disposable straight razor. Shave began with application of hot shave cream which was left standing minute or so before hot towel was placed over it. Once hot towel removed an organic oil, made by a lady locally in Tucson, was worked into face. Then an almond shave cream was worked onto face and neck by hand, on top of oil. Can't recall brand of cream. Three passes, each preceded by more cream. Final pass was oil only. Finished with hot towel to remove oil and cream and then some shaving of neck line wih hot cream after sittig back up. After shave was a nice refreshing wake up, smelled just like my grandfather's! Haircut and shave superb. Barbershop manned by younger hard working barbers and ambiance was focused on Univ of Arizona sports and teams. They had quite a selection of shave brushes, creams, mugs, DE razors, blades, etc. on display behind glass case, all for sale of course.

Review - by Price 02/16/2014 - Small, one-chair operation in North Park/Hillcrest area. Appointment only. David, the barber, is very knowledgeable and very personable. Full-service barber, but he specializes in straight shaves. He uses a Feather AC due to health code, but has a great display of vintage straights & DE's on the wall. His chair is awesome, too - a 100-year-old wooden-framed barber chair. Like most guys on B&B, I have a pretty high standard for shaves, and this guy is legit. I got a great shave, and had a tremendous experience. I will definitely be back.

New barbershop located in River City Marketplace, over by Starbucks. It's decorated like a "Man Cave", with pool table and flat screen TV's (tuned to ESPN, of course). There's also a pretty neat kid's race-car barber stool! On to the cut. First time I went in, there was one barber, Smiley, there. Being in the military, I asked for a trim, nothing fancy, nothing different than what I normally get. I walked away Very impressed! Definitely the best haircut I've had in the last ten years, maybe longer. I noticed they offer "hot-towel shaves", so on my second visit, I go for it. I go in, and there's two women and Smiley in there. I'm not picky, so when my turn is up I hop in the chair, with Missey. I tell her I want a shave and she says okay. I didn't need a haircut, but I was looking to mix it up a bit, and that's what I tell her. When she's done with the cut, she throws some gel in the hair (I haven't worn gel/mousse since high school!) It actually came out okay. On to the shave. She applies some cream from one of those machines, then throws a warm towel on my face while she preps. On the first pass she uses a shavette. On the second pass, she used a cart. It took her a while to get my neck and chin area, but that's understandable. All in all it took about thirty minutes. Walking out, I noticed quite a few spots that were missed, including directly beneath my nose, and several areas on my chin/neck area. Granted those are the tough spots, but those are the tough spots for all guys. Damage = $15 / haircut; $20 / shave.
Will I go back? Definitely! Will I get a shave again? Probably, but I'll try someone else. Seems like with Smiley, I got more of a "barber" style cut, where with Missey, I got more of a "salon" style.
BTW, they do offer a variety of wetshaving products for sale, including blades, proraso products, Omega brushes, and more.

Since he works in the medical district he works by appointment only to cater to his clientele. The man who will be cutting your hair has been in the business for ~40 years and knows how to use a straight razor. This place has a very old fashioned feel to it. Bart (the owner) charges about ~$18 for a haircut or a straight shave (you buy a 30 minute time slot). If you want to have both done then make sure you tell him that on the phone so he can book 2 time slots for you. Great place to go in Chicago. After I got my first straight shave I went home and started reading up on old-fashioned shaving which led me to this site. He definitely helped me say goodbye to my Fusion forever! The straight shave with him was the closest I've ever experienced. BBS!

  • By elmango. As of March 2012 - Manned by hard working young Puerto-Rican/American barbers (in their mid to late 20's) that are all about business. Shave experience: First applied an oil onto face and neck areas to be shaved. They then placed warm (not hot) towels on face which was followed by more oil rubbed into face followed by application of warm shaving cream. Shave done via a single edge safety razor held in the barber's bare hand! I hadn't experienced that before and resulted in a mediocre shave by my barber. Had to clean up shave when I got to hotel. No shoe shine available. Ambiance: modern with large flat screen TVs up on wall with latest sports event always on. Cost: Haircut and a shave - $24.

For shaves I would rate this place a 7/10. There was almost no prep, just a hot towel for about a minute immediately followed by warm lather from a machine. The barber, Dave, uses a disposable straight and made one pass in most areas and two in the thicker areas. Post shave was a cold towel for about a minute followed by a light application of a nice after shave lotion. It wasn't luxurious, and while the shave wasn't BBS, there were absolutely no nicks, cuts, or irritation of any kind. It's certainly much better than what your average shaver would give themselves at home, but not really anything special for us wet shavers.

This is the best barbershop that I have ever visited, and I would put my money on Old Familiar to be one of the best barbershops in the United States. I don't know when it opened, but the two owners, Kenji and Josh, are great barbers and great entrepreneurs. They specialize in straight razor work, detailed fade work, BS and dirty jokes. All of their services are reasonably priced, they have a great product line-up and the barbershop feels and looks like a gentleman's parlor from the 1930s.

Manually operated chairs, striped barberpole by door, hand painted window, jars of blue barbicide old local sports memorabilia on the walls, good products (Pinaud Clubman, Osage, Layrite) and most importantly REAL STRAIGHT RAZOR SHAVES. Prices are a little higher than franchise places (Haircuts $22 and Shaves $20) but WELL WORTH IT for everything done the right way by real barbers.

  • By elmango on 2012-03-20 - You can feel the history seep into your bones as you're laid back in your barber chair for a classic straight razor shave. This is an original old-fashioned barbershop, complete with barber chairs from the 1920's. Barbers provide a terrific shave with hot towels and warm shave cream. Shoe shine by Drew is a work of art and lasts approximately 10 minutes while hair is being cut. Results of shoe shine lasts many days longer than any other shoe shine I've ever received. To wrap up service clients receive classic shoulder massage via electric hand-held machine massager.

I went there 4/11, and didn't discover B&B until 8/11, so I can't recall the details of the experience. The decor is 50s retro. I have a shave and a cut with Eric, the latter being near the top I've ever had and the former being the best I've ever had. The price was fair, at $17 per, generally taking about 30 min for each component.
