Force To Cut

Force to cut (FTC) is an important concept for the Science of Shaving. It expresses the force necessary to cut a specified distance through a specified sample material, often a block of felt or rubber. FTC is measured using a test rig, and the measurements taken on one rig will be specific to that rig. However FTC can be used to measure the relative sharpness of two or more edges across a number of cuts.

Units for FTC are the same as for force: generally newtons (N) or pounds-force (lb).

Prep can reduce FTC by softening hair. Anti-friction blade coatings can also reduce FTC. However consistency of FTC may be at least as important as absolute FTC, so that the shaver can apply cutting force in a predictable way.
