Svengali! I didn't realize this was here!
I'm sure others will read this eventually, but I'll use it to keep track of my stuff for own purposes.

list o' stuff
Okay, here's my list of stuff, since that's what people do in these things. I'll try to order by acquisition:

RAZORS
+Gillette Old Type Ball End - from a Khaki Set. the case is in fair condition, the blade box and mirror are missing. bought at antique store in Tallahassee.
+Edwin Jagger DE89 - bought from a B&Ber. great razor!
+GEM Micromatic open comb - the original MM, probably from the 30s or 40s. bought at antique store in Tallahassee

SOAPS
+VDH Luxury soap, scented (from Luxury set at Target)
+CO Bigelow - $5 tube from bath and body works. the first time I used it, I unthinkingly said "whoa!" to myself in the mirror. quite a shocking and wonderful experience. Is all Proraso this way?
+P.160 Tipo Morbido - PIF winnings. 5.5 ounces. A wonderful cream that is out of prduction. Used sparingly and makes me want to eat cookies with almonds in them.
+VDH deluxe puck. included with the DE89 I bought. largely ignored, unless I make superlather with it.
+Cremo Creme - got it for free by buying something else at a grocery store.

BRUSHES
+Van DerHagen boar brush with black plastic handle (from Luxury set at Target)

BLADES
+Astra SP - 5 pack, included with DE89
+Wilkinson Sword - from local drugstore
+GEM stainless steel SE - from walgreens
+various blades in a sampler pack, also from buying that DE89

AFTERSHAVE
+Old Spice Aftershave
+Witch hazel - from publix. label said "compare to Dickinson's." it's the simple kind, without added weird stuff.
+Origins - white tea liquid moisturizer. my wife gave me this because I complained about my skin being dried out by the VDH soap because I left it on too long.

OTHER STUFF

+Van DerHagen apothecary mug, black. nice! (from Luxury set at Target)
+Van DerHagen acrylic razor/brush drip stand (from Luxury set at Target)
+Styptic pencil - clubman. one day I took my shave too far and rubbed the pencil all over my face like an alum block (which I've never used) and this was the worst shaving experience I've ever had. styptic pencils are NOT alum blocks. I felt like Smeagol in the elfin rope.

Things I own but don't yet have
+Feather double edge blades - a carton of 100, from Dr. Idiot.
+Some sort of straight razor - a PIF from danjared!
+Some sort of brush - from same PIF
+Some sort of soap - from same PIF
+A strop of unknown nature - from same PIF
+A hone of unknown nature - from same PIF

things to acquire
-a better shower mirror
-some sort of aftershave balm: for when I overdo things. perhaps the new Proraso blue?
-a 100 pack of Astra SP
-a metal blade safe to replace the one I made from a condensed milk can.
-a couple of metal tube keys (from vintage blades llc.)
-silvertip brush (from whipped dog?)

a good shave
So far, here's what gives me a good shave:

I have my VDH soap in my apothecary mug. I put some hot water on top to soften it up. I soak my brush and a cereal bowl in a sink of hot water. Load up my razor with a blade and set it on the counter. I shower. I wash my face like normal (with wife's origins white tea face wash) and then use a microderm scrub from Mary Kay (also from my wife. thanks wife!)

If I have a hand towel, I put that over the mirror while I'm showering to it doesn't fog up.
After the shower, I dry everything but my face, comb my hair back, dump out the VDH mug and the cereal bowl. I let the boar brush drip on the stand, but I don't shake it. I do the upside down lather trick with the VDH in the mug and then squeeze an "almond size" amount of Bigelow into the cereal bowl. I swirl the brush around about 120 times and then I add water with my hand: just a few drops at a time. I've noticed when the lather gets big, it falls out of the bowl less when I move my brush counter-clockwise.
I let out some of the sink water and put the bowl back in the little puddle. My brush stays in the warm bowl. Usually I do 3 passes (WTG, XTG, ATG) plus little touchups. When I used that Feather blade, I did two passes and needed nothing else.

After the shave: warm water rinse, cold water rinse using the shower head sprayer attachment. witch hazel on a cotton pad all over face. clean up the razor/bowl/brush. moisturizer (if I feel I need it.) wipe up the water, comb the hair, put on shirt, etc.
Finish up with Old Spice aftershave splashed on. If my skin feels dry after that, a little more moisturizer. If I'm wearing a tie, definitely moisturizer on the neck/collar line.

my shaving plan
Here's my proposed weekly shaving structure:
On days when I'm in a hurry:
-Gem MM and latherless cream (like creamo creme or jack black beard lube) in the shower! (I need a better shower mirror.)

On days when I shave before work but have more time:
-DE89 with a Feather and Proraso cream.

On days when I shave at night before bed:
-Old Type with an Astra and any soap/cream I feel like.

On Saturdays when the family has left me alone in the house and I have an hour or two to kill:
-the straight razor that I won in a PIF last week.
