About Me

I am a young professional in the financial industry. I work as a product manager for mobile apps for a big financial firm. I was born in Korea but came to the U.S. when I was 2. Pretty much grew up in the NJ/NY area except for my college years at Brandeis. Here is my Hall of Fame entry if you would like to see more information.

In January 2015, I decided to try wet shaving. I look the plunge because cartridges and electrics were not giving me close shaves and I encountered a lot of skin irritation. I originally read about DE shaving in one of the forums on Ask Andy About Clothes forum and decided to dig more into it.

Interests and Hobbies

I love to play golf but never have enough time. I am an in-between bogey to double bogey player. My dad recently gifted me a set of Mizuno MP-5s. They finally match my Mizuno MP-10 wedges.

In high school and college, I used to play a lot of billiards. Unfortunately, many of the local pool halls have closed down throughout the years. I blame the ban of smoking inside for this. I still have my entry level McDermott pool cue in my closet.

Along with participating in the B&B forums, I am an active member of two big clothing forums, Ask Andy About Clothes and Dappered. I view my style of dress as Trad with a bit of modern mixed in. Check out some of my posts on the What Are You Wearing threads.

Shaving Gear

Since I have joined, I have kept my collection pretty minimal to ensure my AD is under control.

DE Razors

ManufacturerModelComments
GilletteNew OCDAILY DRIVER: I got this from the PIF vs passaround box thread. I tried it and fell in love with it. I cleaned it up as much as I could and it has come out very nice. It provides me with a pretty close shave without too much effort. I have a feeling this is going to make me go down the rabbit hole for RAD very soon.
UnknownTTOI believe it is a Weishi but I am not sure. It is very mild and very easy to use. When I do not care and just need to shave without worry, this is my go to razor.
UnknownFat Handle; 3 pieceGot this from a pop up auction for the 'Saint' Sue Moore Memorial Fundraiser 2015. I have used it several times and like the one above, it performs effortless with a bit more heft.

Retired DEs

  • Lord L6 - This was my first DE razor. I used it from January to August. The only reason why it is no longer in my collection is that I left it at a hotel during a wedding in San Francisco. Very mild and a perfect razor IMHO for a beginner.

Brushes

ManufacturerModelComments
Omega10018KEEPER: Broken in and very easy to use. Smaller knot but no complaints.
Semogue1800KEEPER: Still breaking in but has performed great. Great backbone and slowly splitting hairs nicely. Love it for face lathering and bowl lathering

Retired Brushes:

  • VDH Boar Brush - Inner knot started to fall apart and is shedding like no other. I still have it as a backup for emergency purposes.

Soaps & Creams

ManufacturerTypeComments
AoSHard Soap;
Sandlewood
I love the scent and it is the older version since it is tallow based. Lathers up very easily and would definitely repurchase on eBay.
CO Bigelow
(Proraso rebranded)
Tube CreamTook me a lather or two to appreciate the scent. Easiest product to create a thick and smooth lather. Great for both bowl and face lathering. Would try other Prorarso creams based on experience.
PalmoliveShaving StickTBD - still in box and haven't used.

3017 Soaps & Creams

  • VDH Deluxe Soap - Got it in the VDH set. I enjoyed the scent. Performed very well for a cheap soap. If I ever ran out of soap, I would happily go out to a local pharmacy and pick one up again without hesitation.
  • Modern Williams Mug Soap - Saw it at A&P one time, and I bought it without hesitation. For a $1.xx soap, you couldn't complain about the performance. Lathered up with a little bit of elbow grease and provided great protection. It did remind of Ivory soap though.
  • L'Occitane Cade Soap - This was my first "luxury" soap purchase since it was easy to find. My SWMBO loves L'Occitane. I loved the scent, but the lather was just OK. I felt like the VDH and AoS soaps provided a thicker, smoother lather. YMMV.

Aftershave

ManufacturerTypeComments
Aqua VelvaIce BlueFor a cooler aftershave, this is my go to. Pleasant scent without overwhelming me. Scent doesn't last as long compared to others.
Aqua VelvaMuskMy go to aftershave for the fall/winter months. The scent lasts much longer than the Ice Blue.

Retired Aftershaves

  • Kiehl's Aftershave Balm - The scent wasn't anything special. And smelled almost medicated. Provided great moisture and protection especially after a rough shave. PIF thru pif vs passaround box but the box got lost....
  • Adidas Pulse Aftershave - Bought this years ago. Very sporty scent and was not my cup of tea. Smelled very similar to their cologne. PIF thru pif vs passaround box but the box got lost....
  • Nivea Cool Splash Aftershave Balm - It was okay but nothing special. The Kiehl's was a better balm.

Blades

ManufacturerComments
Astra SPThe sharpest and comfortable blade for me if I wanted to get BBS with two passes.
SharkMy go to blade since it gives me the best of everything: sharpness, comfort, longevity, irritation free. I like these slightly over the Astra
DerbyI would rate Derby's a B. Nothing special and nothing bad. It performs on the average range. If I ran out of my go to blades, I would reach for the Derby
BluebirdBluebird was the first blade that offered a pretty smooth shave without irritation. I really liked them until I tried a Shark. Would be happy to give them another go around.
Personna BlueI HAVE TRIED SO MANY TIMES TO LIKE THIS BLADE. Every time, I am left unsatisfied. I get the most irritation from this blade and more pulling/tugging. I am just not a fan. Alas, YMMV.
BolzanoI don't remember the experience but didn't like them.
RapiraSame as above
Lord Premium1st blade I used and did not like them. Every other blade seemed to be better than these.
BICHave them in stock but never used yet. Review is TBD
Gillette 7 O'Clock SilverHave them in stock but never used yet. Review is TBD

Thai Crystal Alum BlockGreat tool. Provides feedback and closes up skin. Awesome with small nicks for stopping bleeding/
Thayer's Witch Hazel Rose PetalNever a day goes by without me using it after my shave. If I do not shave, I still use this after washing my face as a toner before I put on face lotion. Very underrated. I tried regular Witch Hazel and would always go back to Thayer's due to the scent and performance.
