Special Edition Gillette 195 Adjustable "Bottom Dial" ("Heavy")
Manufacturer: Gillette
Dates in Production: 1960
Type: DE, TTO, Adjustable 1-9
Weight: 3.0 oz (85 grams)
Description: An interesting variation of the standard 195 adjustable that was produced in limited quantities in 1960 and was not retailed. The hallmark is the adjustment dial location at the bottom of the handle, above the TTO knob. There were several versions of the "bottom dialer", including one with a dial of 9 clicks and one with a dial of 5. This is one of Gillette’s heaviest razors. It has very solid thick chrome plating. One of Gillette's best made razor, TTO and blade adjustment are smooth and accurate. On the inside: "PAT. NOS. ON PKG.", on the underside, top: "REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. | "date code with year and quarter" F-4 1960 4th quarter, underside, and bottom: "[Gillette diamond] MADE IN U.S.A."
Notes of Interest: Made only this one year very limited production. It is not certain it was ever retailed.
Notes of interest: The Gillette company labeled most or all of the "Fatboy" editions as "195 adjustable" as indicated on outer shippers and instructions. So "195" is not a unique name for either versions. The bottom dial razors do not fit into the "standard" Fat-Boy cases and have similar cases - but a little larger, with the magnifying glass on the right. Recently it was suggested that these should be dubbed "195 bottom dial" to differentiate from the much more common 195 Fat Boy (Top Dial).
